New orientations in the sociology of tourism
summary
This review article begins with a survey of the changing nature of the discourse on tourism from the 1960s to the present, and focuses on seven topics that we consider to be at the forefront of current developments in the sociological study of tourism: emotions, sensory experiences, materiality, gender, ethics, authentication and the philosophical foundations of tourism theories. We have seen that the sociology of tourism has been characterized in recent years by three general trends: the growing application of new specific theories from other fields to tourism, the search for new facets of the tourism phenomenon and the most intense research in the state of tourism as a intellectual. or cultural project. We conclude that although the application of a series of new perspectives and theoretical facets largely reflects the post-modern movement of binary thinking and concepts, the sociology of tourism still contributes little to the discipline of sociology and must therefore address important emerging issues. like deglobalization and current nationalist movements towards isolationism, to do so .
